Development and practical testing of factory concepts where production sites are no longer merely passive consumers but play an active and flexible role on the energy market.


Data interfaces to all machines allow for recording, synchronization and evaluation of all order, material and energy fluxes as a basis for developing a central energy and resource management solution.

Demonstration units

  • Test bench for visualizing information within a reference process chain
  • IT supported decision-making tools and data visualizations for personnel operating and managing the system and for production and factory management
  • Intelligent networking and integration of the building infrastructure (combined heat and power plant, photovoltaic system, energy storage systems)

eniMES framework

Energy-sensitive production control

The eniMES framework is a management system for energy and material fluxes, developed at the Fraunhofer IWU. The system can reduce the energy requirements of the E³-Forschungsfabrik by 20% and can shorten commissioning times for production control systems.

Resource and Energy Efficient Manufacturing (REEMAIN)

The quest for emission-neutral production

The end of October 2013 marked the start of the EU project “REEMAIN”, which has initially been scheduled to last four years. In addition to the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU, 15 partners from 6 countries in total are also involved in the consortium. The objective of the cross-border research collaboration consists in the quest for emission-neutral production by exploiting the potential for energy and resource savings in production processes. Solutions are jointly developed and tested with industrial partners in the areas of production processes, energy production and storage as well as resource allocation.
